Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

What can you tell me about Pre-trail interventions PTI for shop lifting cases under $90 worth of stuff? I live in Broward, Florida. I have never been arrested, never used drugs, stolen, or broken the law, except one speeding ticket. I am 22 years old and applying to a medical graduate program in a few months. I am extremely concerned that this will be on my record forever if I do not get into the PTI program. Do I need a lawyer?

PTI is an agreement between you and the prosecutor's office. They will lay out an agreement that is similar to being on probation which may include theft classes or community services. If you successfully complete the program your charges will be dismissed. The arrest will show up on your record, but you will be eligible to have it expunged after completion of the PTI program. A lawyer can help you with the process and with the subsequent sealing/expunction.

In Broward, their diversion program will only be available within 30 days of arraignment. I suggest the assistance of counsel considering the ramifications in regard to your medical graduate program. It will be imperative to expunge your record at the conclusion of the diversion program. Call me if you have any questions.
