Power of attorney

My step dad has lung cancer and my mother wants to ensure she can act on his behalf in all matters. Is there a secific type of POA to use in this situation and is it necessary to go through a lawyer. Thanks

Re: Power of attorney

You need a durable power of attorney, which is sometimes called "health care surrogacy." You do not technically need a lawyer. But an attorney can tell you what can and cannot be done, when, how, etc. Since you are probably going to have to pay for documents (that may not be the most sophisticated) and since lawyers know what to watch for, I would not recommend doing anything like this without one.
