Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Florida

ownership of a dog in Tampa, fl

If my ex and I had a dog but she worked for an vet office and to use her discount we had to have the dogs records in my ex's name. When we split, we both agreed that I could have the dog. Now she is saying that I did not have consent to take the dog. She never sent texts or called saying I took the dog without consent. My question is since I bought the dog from a breeder 3 years ago and neither one of us have evidence of the purchase. How do I establish the ownership of the dog? and how can I get the dogs medical records since they are not in my name? Since everything records etc is under her name since she has always worked for a vet clinic since we got the dog to where we had to pay little or nothing for her care. She is claiming that I stole the dog without constent. I've had the dog now about 2 months and she never called on her own or even said I took the dog with out consent until I call or text her, and even then she has never stated that I took the dog or demanded the dog back.

If you have the dog now, I wouldn't worry about it, but the ownership of the dog is best determined by the name it's licensed under. If end up in a lawsuit, she can sue you for the value of the dog, not the dog itself (dogs are considered property), and you can subpoena the vet records to prove that the dog has always been yours.
