Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

I work at a convenience store in Florida. My employer forces employees to pay for fuel drive offs and any register shortages that occur, no matter the amount. Is this legal? And can I legally be fired for refusing to pay for these losses?

It is my understanding that it is illegal to force employees to pay for register shortages, walk-outs, drive-offs, etc. (bills customers did not pay). The employer's remedy is not to make you pay for it but to fire you.
