roof fell in on home we renting, landlord not helping

My family and I whose names are all on the lease, were living in a home for 7 years. the ceiling fell in. the entire roof. due to water. we told the landlords. they came down here. are here now. said they will write us a check but only after we get all of our stuff out. we dont want all that stuff. it is damaged and not usable. we dont have a place to live. we have been living in a motel for 4 days now. we trying to find place to stay landlord not helping. what rights do we have? cant they keep the security deposit to pay for what we stuff we dont remove from the house?

The landlord has a duty to maintain the roof of the premises. If he/she has not done so, they are responsible for any damage you incur. If the landlord will not cooperate, you should consult a local attorney to review this matter and who can then advise you on your legal rights and remedies.
