Legal Question in Military Law in Florida

AWOL in the navy

Hi. My friend is in trouble. he was home for the holiday weekend. Sat night they called him and said he had to report to duty. Its an 8 hour drive from his home to where he is stationed so he would have had to leave yesterday morning at 1. He wanted to stay longer so to make a long story short, he didnt make it back to base until 12 hours after he was supposed to report to duty. He is in the navy. He was able to text me last night but not able to call and let me know they considered him AWOL and he has to go in front of a review board. today i call and the cell goes straight to voicemail. Is he in trouble? What is the least they will probably do to him and what is the worst? he was only gone 12 hours and fully intended to return. Please help.

Re: AWOL in the navy

The least they will likley do is issue a negative counseling statement to him. Moving along the continuum, the command might also consider pursuing non-judicial punishment (Captain's Mast) at which reduction in rank, extra duty, and forfeiture of some pay are possible punishments. See Article 86, Uniform Code of Military Justice.
