Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

Credit and Debt

Can a Collection Agency determine the amount of the payment each month to pay off a debt even if it is too much for me to pay? A credit company represents an account I have in collections (it does not own the account) and insists that it cannot take less then $500 per month. Is that logical? They say I will be in BIG trouble if I change it.

Thanks
