Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

Handling Dad's debts

Since my mom's death in August 2005, my dad has declined rapidly. He put me on his checking account in Sept 2005 so I could help him write the checks for his bills. He didn't own a house, so I moved him to a retirement appartment, where he signed a year's lease. He has now been diagnosed with Alzheimers and needs to go to an assisted living facility. His ONLY income is Social Security and his only insurance is Medicare. We have applied to the VA for assisted living benefits, since his income is not sufficient to pay for those accomodations. With the VA benefits and his entire SS check, there will be just barely enough money to pay the assisted living facility. My question is: he has a $14,000.00 credit card debt that he will not have enough income to make the payments with, as his Power of Attorney, can I be held liable for that debt. He truly has no assets or savings and I can't afford to take on that debt. What, in your oppinion, would be the best way to handle this situation.

Unless you co-signed for the debt, it's his debt and not yours.

I'd write the creditors a letter, tell them he is an Alzheimers patient with no assets in assisted living, and the creditors probably won't do much, as there's nothing they really can do to collect.
