Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

I have a lien placed on my credit by the State of Georgia for taxes I owe from 2002 on a vehicle I never knew I owned. My ex-husband, who is now deceased in 2006, registered the vehicle in my name without my knowledge. I now owe the taxes to Georgia. Is there anything I can do? I don't feel I should be the one to pay these, I never knew about this vehicle. Its ruining my credit. What type of law does this fall under? What do I do?

This falls under tax, not debt collection.

I don't know if some kind of innocent spouse exception would apply. You can probably get them to waive some of the penalties and interest but you are probably going to have to pay the taxes. If you cannot afford to pay in a lump sum, maybe they will agree to a payment plan.

I have handled some tax debt for my PA clients, but I have never worked with the GA Department of Revenue. If I were you, you can try re-posting your question under GA tax law and see if there are any tax attorneys in GA who will answer. However, it will be cheaper perhaps if you just go to a CPA in your area who is familiar with these kinds of taxes. Stay away from places like Jackson Hewett or H&R Block- they are fine for filing simple tax returns, but this is way beyond that and you need someone who knows what they are doing.
