Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

being sued...internationally

my husband was loaned $9,000 from his family in Canada. He had promised to pay it back last spring but unfortunately will not be able to pay back for 8 more months. They are threatening to sue us. We live in Georgia, they live in Canada. Can they do this and will it go on our credit report?

Sure a lawsuit can be filed (otherwise there would be little foreign trade), and a judgment will go on a credit report.

Unless you pay it or file bankruptcy (call me to discuss that option), they can do it easily. All they have to do is hire a lawyer, and file suit. When and if they win, they can garnishee your pay and bank account and levy on a home.
