Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

I leased a car through a lease trade broker who the payments were made through. A couple of months ago the broker stopped transmitting the payments to the original owner. The owner reported the car stolen and I was pulled over and taken to jail. I have been charged with theft by receipt of stolen vehicle. I have documentation showing that I never stopped making the payments and have also found 5 other people that this broker has scammed.

Does this documentation show that I was unaware that the car was stolen? I do know in my state they have to prove that I knowingly took possession of a stolen vehicle. But I have had the car for over a year...it was only reported stolen 3 months ago.

You need a good criminal lawyer.

Now the question you didn't ask: When you went through a "broker" you deliberately assisted the owner in a breach of contract, as no leases or sales contracts allopw you to legally do what you did. Talk to your lawyer about any additional liability this may cause you. In dealing with a criminal (the broker and also the owner are both criminals) you ended up wrapped up in the crime.
