email and employers

Can an employer legally read an employe's emails sent using yahoo, hotmail, ect.? The computer is owned by the company.

Yes. The computer which is provided to you at work belongs to your employer. Also, a number of Illinois cases have held that employees do not have right of privacy using their e-mails. Besides, I am assuming these computers are network-controlled by your employer which practically allows installation of monitoring software on those computers. So watch out, your employers can have access to your e-mail if you access it at work!

Yes. The current state of the law provides no expectation of privacy for any computer use on the job. Never surf anywhere you don't want management to know about, and always remember that your Emails, in and out, are subject to review by others without your knowledge or permission. Do your personal stuff at home on your computer and the problem will be avoided.
