Is it illegal in the united states to sell lies, alibi's or excuses to people? what type of liabilities would a person be looking at in the united states?

A "lie" itself is not unlawful, such that if a husband tells his wife that he worked late when, in fact, he went out for a drink (as long as it does not cause "damage" to the wife).

If, however, the "lie" is used as part of a scheme to defraud someone, then liability will attach. Someone who sells a "lie" -- whatever that means -- could be held responsible as a participant or aider & abetter to the fraud.
