Legal Question in Consumer Law in Illinois

receiving unsolicated merchandise after canceling membership to club

I was a member of Columbia house record club. After completing my enrolement, I canceled my membership. I continued to receive the monthly notices. The first time, I wrote ''Cancel'' all over the reply card and sent it back. The next month I didn't send anything in and received the merchandice, which I wrote ''cancel'' all over it and set it back. They then sent me an additional item which I decided to keep remembering that if you receive unsolicated merchandice through the mail, you can keep it and you are not obligated to pay for it. Is that correct?

No. First, from what I know, Columbia has a deal that you get 12 free if you buy 4/5 over the next two years. Second, if there's an issue with payment, then the mailing was not unsolicited.
