Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Help with dealing with collection agency.

About a year and a half ago I was involved in a car accident which resulted in a rather large hospital bill. At the time I disputed several bills, in which it appeared that I was double-charged for several items. My husband and I also separated (not legally) around the same time. Yesterday, he called me because a collection agency phoned him and told him that he owes this bill. I returned the call and was immediately told that unless he or I either paid in full or agreed to a huge monthly payment that they would take this to court. He threatened to take my home and or my husband's small business. Can they do this? And what if anything can I do to not have my husband liable for a bill that his name doesn't appear on?

If this is correct, this is one of THE most flagrant violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act I have encountered in years. Make sure you write down the date, time, the name of the caller (if it was provided), the name of the collection agency, and as much of the conversation as you can recall. Keep a notepad by your telephone for future calls. Oh, and don't forget to call or email an attorney familiar with the FDCPA. Unbelievable.
