Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Parental Responsibility College Costs

Hi, I have a son who attends Univ of Illinois. He is 21. He has a Learning Disability that was documented by the school's Student Disability Department. For the past three years, he has not shared his grades with me. The school, because he is over 21, will not release his grades to me. I am currently refusing to sign a Parent PLUS Loan on his behalf. Can the school come after me for the collection of his student debt/account with the school? He claims the school agreed to expunge his grades that occurred on his records before his learning disability was fully documented. To add to this, the student has defaulted to his creditors (i.e. bank note for a car and several cell phone accounts.) I want to protect my credit record from his delinquencies; unfortunately, credit card companies make it very easy for students to get into debt quickly.

If you are a co-signer/maker on any loan documents then yes they can turn to you for payment. If this is not the case then in most situations you can not be touched for the student loans. The same goes for the other debts.
