Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Illinois

How can I help myself?

I'm seeking qualified advise on how I can understand what information may have communicated in a background and reference check. I recently was offered an job which was rescinded several days later, ''after the results of the check was completed''. I know that no references were called and therefore believe that something was revealed in the background search from previous employers. I've been termed twice from executive sales management positions in Colorado and Illinos. I understand their right to do this. However I am left with no explainations or feedback. I have been honest in all information I provide in resumes, interviews

applications, etc. No legal, drug, sexual harassment issues. I've been told that I can request information, in this case only if it pertains to the results of my credit background. I am a good person, with excellent professional and personal references from the associates that I've worked with over the years. I simply want to understand what the issue is in this case so that I can confront it personally if there is something I'm missing. I'm a 52 year old male and embarrassed beyond belief, and only want to help myself. Can someone help me understand what I can begin to do?
