Is there anytnihg legally bindig to protect an off the record comment? In other words, can a journalist reveal a source without criminal or civil consequences?

In theory, there may have been a breach of an informal conficentiality agreement. There would have to be extensive damages as any litigation would involve the First Amendment and newspapers usually fight those types of cases quite strenuously.
