Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

Can your employer fire employee with no reason?

I was fired recently from my job and they gave me no reason. I had worked there for 10 years with no disciplinary actions in my file, nothing against my work record, excellent attendance, etc. The letter just states that December 1 is my last day of employment and they will give me $2000 severance pay if I sign the letter. The letter also states I will not sue them for any reason. Is is legal for them to fire me with no reason?

In Illinois, an employer can terminate you for any reason, no reason, or a made up reason, unless terminating you violates an employment agreement, collective bargaining agreement, or law. You were offered severance. You should have an attorney carefully review the agreement you will be required to sign to collect the severance. Such agreements waive certain very important rights such as possible claims you might have against the employer or unemployment benefits.
