Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

Tax law

I gave my employer a notice to stop my direct deposit. They did not stop it. They intern deposit the amount of $500.00 to a account that I nolonger had. Human resource states that at the end of the tax year I will be taxed for the amount that was posted to a account that I nolonger had. Is this legal?
