I have been living month to month with no paper work just word of mouth and my rent receipts is this unlawful or will pose a problem for me as a tenant.

If you are living on an oral agreement, then the Courts will call this a "tenancy at will." Generally speaking, your landlord needs to give you 30 days notice before evicting you. You are not breaking any laws, but the biggest problem you have is that the landlord can evict you at any time with minimal notice.
