Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

I live in 3 flat. My landlord does not have working radiator and broken windows in the first bedroom. She says there is nothing she do about it. I mentioned this to her over a month ago. What are my tenant rights?

Does your landlord live in the building, or not. If so, you have rights under Illinois law. If not, you have additional rights under the Chicago Residential Landlord & Tenant Ordinance.

Either way on WRITTEN notice if the landlord still refuses to repair the window, you can have that repaired and if the damage was not your fault, deduct some or all of it (depending on cost and up to the legal limits) from your rent.

Same with the radiator if it is just for that room; the problem is whether it is the whole heating system or just that radiator.

You may have other and additional rights depending on your lease and the circumstances. If you need help understanding or exercising your rights, you would need to take your lease to an attorney for a full review.

Please understand that if you exercise your rights and the landlord is not aware of them, the landlord could try to make trouble for you even if you are in the right, which could just be a lot more trouble for you. That's another reason why you should see an attorney who may be able to act on your behalf so the landlord doesn't think it's just you doing it, and may think twice about making trouble for you if the landlord knows you have an attorney on your side....
