Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

Homeowner exemption violation

I have a potential client who would like to list all of his 3 properties /multi-unit buildings/ with me. While I was researching for his property taxes I noticed that for 2007 he has homeowner exemption for all of the properties, while he has only 1 principal residence and he has been living there since he bought the buildings - all 3 at the same time. I know that this is against the law. I don't know how to proceed with this situation if I accept to take these listings. How serious is this violation? What are the penalties and consequences for the owner?

Re: Homeowner exemption violation

Check with the county treasurer's office as to the penalties and consequences. Does your client need an attorney? This message is not legal advice because you are not as yet my client.
