Legal Question in Traffic Law in Illinois

Lawyer from another state

My dad and brother are both career law enforcement and have made my life miserable for years. I have been tricked and deceived so many times by them and their friends both cops and lawyers that I now trust NO cops or lawyers anywhere. But now I need to get my drivers license back but I'm afraid that any lawyer I get will know my dad (because our family name is well known in illinois law circles) and then they will pull another dirty trick on me. So now what can I do? I have other problems like credit and liens, but I cannot get it straightened out without a lawyer. I have tried callling a few local lawyers but when they hear my name they always ask if I'm related to XXX. Can I get a lawyer from another state like Michigan to help me?

Re: Lawyer from another state

From your post I would be willing to bet that you are located in Northern Illinois. If you were in any of the counties nearer St. Louis, I would be very willing and able to help you. To answer your question, you can certainly hire an attorney from out of your area or even out of state so long as that attorney is licensed in Illinois and is competent to provide the services you need.

I do not know your problems, but if they involve clearing up your Illinois driving privileges, it is unlikely (though not impossible) that an out of state attorney can help. Driver licensing law can be quite intricate, and usually is only handled by attorneys familiar with the state involved. Also, an out of state attorney cannot practice law without permission of a court, and then only for a specific case. There are many obstacles for an attorney not licensed in the state where the problem arises. If you wish to discuss the matter, feel free to contact our office.
