Once I've written my will without the assistance of a lawyer, how does the will become a legal document?

The will's validity does not depend on who drafted it. But if it is not written by a lawyer then the odds that it is defective is much greater. www.legacylaws.com.

If executed and witnessed correctly, your will is, technically, a will. However, whether or not your intentions are expressed in a proper manner, such that they have legal efficacy, is another matter. If the will is deemed defective after your death, it will be too late for you to fix it! I recommend you meet with an attorney who can help you draft the will correctly.
