Legal Question in Criminal Law in India

Exempt of husbands evidence hearing

Got married under HMA.wife filed maintenance under 125.Husband works abroad.Husband lawyer has appeared.Magistrate asked husband to be present in the next hearing.

My lawyer is saying that husband is not bound to appear in maintenance case. His lawyer can represents him. It is wife who has filed the case so she needs to be present in the evidence stage but its not mandatory for husband to be present in the hearing as his advocate can represent him to defend him and they will be asking for husband's evidence.

Is it true that if husband just decides to defend himself then his lawyer can represent him and he will not need to appear in any hearing if his lawyer will ask for exempt of his evidence hearing?
