Conversion of Tenanc to Ownership

I stay in a rented apartment since many years of which m father was the original tenant. In 1972 the landlord had formed a society transferring the ownership of flats to tenants by paing a lumpsum amount. We did not opt for the scheme and thus till date our status remains that of a tenant. Now, toda in 2008 we wish to convert to ownership but the landlord denies the same. What legal rights do I have in this case? Is the landlord legally correct in denying me the conversion of tenancy to ownership?

An appropriate answer may depend upon your contractual rights and the local State statute governing this issue. It may be better to consult a local lawyer alongwith your documents as also the documents pertaining to previous transactions in which option was exercised by other tenants seeking transfer of tenancy rights into ownership rights.

Your rights as tenant continues.

There is no obligation in law to convert tenancy into ownership, unless there is an agreement.
