Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana
Collection on a debt that I was told was deleted on my credit report.
When I was married before my ex incurred mountains of debt to which I payed off. The years prior to my divorce I kept a close eye on my credit report, and I would contact the companies that still reported adverse information so I could take care of all errors and clear my report. In 2001 I was informed that there was a supposed outstanding balence to a creditcard company of $2380.14. When i checked my credit records it stated that the information had been Deleted, not verified as accurate.
I sent this collection company documentation of this fact and never recieved information back from them.
Now a new collection company has bought my information from the other company, and they are trying to collect the debt.
Is this possible? It almost sounds like a scam to me, could it be?

Re: Collection on a debt that I was told was deleted on my credit report.
First off, you don't state if you paid the debt or not. Did you? If you did, do you have proof? If so, then give it to them and request they update their records. Secondly, it doesn't matter if they "deleted" it or not if you still owe it. They may have charged it off, but you MAY still owe it. Depends upon how long ago the debt was from, we don't have that information. Finally, if a collection agency is trying to collect a debt, then they are required to provide verification of that debt, IF you request it. So you might want to do that.
