Time Limitations on Summons

After an arrest for possession of marijuana, no charges were filed but my son was told that he would receive a summons for his court appearance. Is there a time limitation between the arrest and the receipt of the summons or is he supposed to wait forever?

Courts and prosecutors are often understaffed and overworked. If your son is a juvenile, he may have to wait months before a summons issues.

I wouldn't call the responsible authority to speed things up.
