Legal Question in Employment Law in Indiana

defamation of charecter, Slander?

My husband was let go of his job in 2004. It took him three months to find another, after he started a lady who reported to him said that her boyfriend worked for the place he used to and they told him he was a drug dealer. He now has a different job and just yerterday a girl came up to him and said her mom worked for *** and they told her that he got fired for dealing drugs. That is not what happened. Can they do this a get by with it?
