Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Iowa

My husband loaned a relative of his $5000 about 5yrs ago and so far he's paid back half, but has been avoiding us as to not pay the rest. If we can get him to sign a confession that he owes us $2500 and chooses not to pay up, would that be enough to take him to court or would we have to provide proof? We have no proof that we loaned him the money.
