Legal Question in Criminal Law in Kansas

How can I help a friend deal with a bench warrant?

I have a friend who was charged on a minor possession charge. She did some community service and paid a fine, and had one final court appearance. However a sudden job offer in Washington caused her to leave Kansas and she therefore failed to appear. She believes a bench warrant has been issued for her arrest, but we are uncertain how to confirm this. We'd also like to make a trip to Europe soon, but we'd like to get this resolved before she tries to get her passport, etc. So I guess my question is in two parts: 1. How do we find out if there is a warrant out for her?, and 2. Is there anyway to resolve the issue without returning to Kansas?

You could call the court to see if there is a warrant and ask if there is anything your friend can do to dispose of it. It is almost certain they will tell you your friend needs to come to court. I suggest you hire a lawyer in the area of the court to look into it for you. Depending on the court, the lawyer may be able to get the case closed out without your friend having to appear. It's also possible the court will require your friend to appear no matter what. Every court/Judge/prosecutor does things their own way. I'm in the Kansas City metro area so let me know if I can help you.
