Legal Question in Employment Law in Kansas

Contract terminated, no cause

I was hired to go to Kansas from Colorado for work. No paper work was ever completed. I accepted the verbal offer and went. I worked in Kansas for 2 weeks, got paid and then was told that I would no longer be needed because an applicant, competing for the job, decided to join the firm. My boss told me that this meant I was out. This was never mentioned prior to being hired. I fulfilled my part of the contract by coming to Kansas. He fulfilled his part of the contract by offering and then paying. There were no problems prior and this caught me blindsided. Do I have any recourse???? Severance or litigation. Thanks

Re: Contract terminated, no cause

You probably have a case against your employer on the theory of detrimental reliance, which has been recognized in Kansas. Since you left Colorado, (did you quit a job there?) and moved to Kansas in reliance upon the employer's representation that you had a job, you can sue for the wages lost from the job you quit and the expense of the move. If you wish to discuss this further, you can call me at 785-843-4110 in Lawrence, Kansas.
