Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

How do I get custody of my child, when her father and I were never married and he lives in south carolina ( in prison since 2004) and I live in Louisiana. We havent seen him since 2001, I also has charges against him from domestic abuse, and harrasment in south carolina and mississippi. Is there anyway that I can file for custody myself without waiting for him? (by the way he will never do, becuase of his criminal record)

You can file for custody and have the court appoint an attorney to represent him in his absence. That attorney will inform him of the suit.
