Who's at fault

Is the apartment complex where I live at fault if I was assaulted in the poorly lit parkinglot by an employee with a criminal background who worked for the complex

Probably not, unless a background check of his record would have revealed a propensity for this type of behavior. If there was a history of assaults in the parking lot and they refused to improve security, there is some legal authority for holding the property owner or manager liable, but it's very difficult.
