Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

Collection Co. Harrassment?

I am having trouble with a collection agency. The first incident occurred when my friend was watching my kids. The company asked if I was home and she stated no.Then proceeded to tell her that I needed to call them immediately because from looking at my tax records I was making enough money to pay this debt and I needed to do something about it. I have also contacted this company and asked them to only contact me through the mail. The second incident was last night. I received a call from my landlord that someone was trying to get in touch with me about School X. In a conversation with my landlord he told me that they inquired as to my phone no., because they were unable to reach me. Her name is K. When aked how she got the no,she replied you mean your landlord? He is on your file as the next contact. She then told me we can call you landlord, your work anyone we want to, to get in touch with you.If my landlord continues to get these calls I risk being kicked out so the calls to him will stop. What can I do now, and is what they have done so far violating the law?

Re: Collection Co. Harrassment?

The debt collector violated federal and state law by disclosing your debt to a third person or persons who have no need for knowing about the debt. Their threats also seem to violate the unfair practice provisions of the FDCPA. You are entitled to statutory damages up to $1,000 under the federal law. Make sure you tell them not to contact you in writing, preferably via certified mail so you can prove you told them. They must stop contacting you then.
