false statements to police

The tenant upstairs had his electricty turned off by bge, he wanted to use mine in my apt, I said no. He then called the police and said i assaulted him, and now I have to appear in court. Isnt it just my word against his..Doesnt he need proof. I do have a lawyer, just asking other people.

Yes, the complainant needs to prove the allegations. In a criminal case, the elements of assault have to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Your attorney will most likely be contacting the State's Attorney's office and filing a Motion for Discovery to determine what evidence exists and whether the State will make any offers.
