Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

Hello. Last June upon entrance to Bonnaroo music festival in Mancester Tennessee my car was randomly searched by police officers at which time they found under 6 grams of marijuana. I was issued a citation and was told I would not have to appear in court, just pay a fine over the phone. After paying a hefty fine in excess of 900 dollars I began to relax, however I am now in the process of attempting to study abroad and am worried about being able to travel to different European countries. I was told that after one year under good behavior this charge would be taken off my record (june 10). What kind of charge was this? Can this be a misdemeanor charge if I did not have to appear in court? Is there a chance that these officers were manipulating me?

You should repost this in the Tennessee criminal law forum, because laws vary from state to state. Ideally, you should have an attorney research the question, because a general response may be inaccurate in your case. When the consequences may be severe enough, you need to know for sure.
