My nephew wants to get a joint custody of his child. he is not married to mother of the child. He's willing topay the child support. How can he get the joint custody without spending a lot of money. He has limited income and still living with his parents. he's 21 years old, working full time but has a lot of financial responsbility and school loan at the moment.

Re: Joint custody of the child

He would have to file a custody petition in the county circuit court, admitting paternity. He will be ordered to pay child support, and it will probably be automatically deducted from his paycheck. He should ask for joint legal custody, which if granted would give him the right to participate in decisions involving the child. Presumably the child is very young, so it's unlikely that he would have residential custody, unless the mother is not fit. But he would be entitled to regular visitation with the child.
