You should consider arranging to have a paternity test before moving forward with other matter. In the event that you would deny paternity, there are alternatives available for her to compell a paternity test. In either event, this is the first step.

Upon paternity being established, you have several matters to address. Custody, both legal and physical, and child support are the most pressing.

Further issues to consider is how insurance will be held as well as other potential matters such as your last will and testament.

Your situation involves more than merely financial considerations. And, these other matters in turn may have a bearing upon future financial issues.

You should contact an attorney.

If you're sure the child is yours, and are prepared to acknowledge and support it, you should so inform the mother, and begin the process of taking care of it. This would entail executing an acknowledgement of paternity, and trying to reach an agreement on an appropriate amount of child support. You would be wise to consult with a family law attorney to make sure your rights are protected, and that all factors are taken into account to determine the correct amount of support. If you aren't sure the child is yours, a paternity test can be arranged.
