Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

I am a stepmother to a 16 yr old. My husband does not use email. My stepchild and his mother do not like me receiving emails/or talking to his teachers. My husband and his ex have joint legal and physical custody with her as the primary parent. The bio mother got my email address off the schools paperpwork and emails me my stepchild's doctor appointments and if there is a problem with the child. I emailed her back and asked her not to use my email for such personal things that she should call my husband directly. Am I within my rights as a stepparent? And what are my rights?

When your stepson is staying in your home under the custody arrangement, you of course have the right to supervise him and enforce the rules of the household. As for dealing with the school, your husband should find out of the school will allow communication with you if he authorizes it. Since he has joint legal custody, he ought to be able to do this.
