Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

Giving the ring back

I was engaged last October and was unengaged in February. My fiance was running around on me and lying to me about various things. He was also living with me. It has been 3 months or better and now his mother wants the ring back. Here's the clincher - His mother gave him the money for the ring and he isn't paying her back for it. Am I obligated to return the ring?

Re: Giving the ring back

The short answer is yes and no. You left many relevant facts

out of your summation. I am assuming the mother knew what the loan was for.

The mother is not entitled to the ring. She loaned her son the money for the ring,

which he bought. Unless, you agreed to return it if anything every went astray to

induced the mother to make the loan to her son. On the other hand, if the son is

asking for it back and you were the one who terminated the relationship, the son would

be entitled to it. There are just to many facts to determine to give a straight forward answer.
