employee takes out shortage and fires person

my daughter worked at an icecream shop and was told she could give employee discounts to family,she did apon asking the manager on duty if if was ok and being told yes two days after she was fired and the money was taken out of her check under deductions it stated 34.00 shortage can they take her money and fire her? my daughter is only 16.

As a general rule an employer may not make deductions from an employees pay as a set-off for "shortages". The employer has other remedies to recover such funds.
