Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Maryland

I am getting ready to rent my home in Silver Spring, MD 20906. I anticipate having multiple applications for rental when I begin accepting applications Saturday. One prospective tenant wants to offer to pay several months rent in advance to strengthen her application. Is this legal? Can I accept this?

There is likely no problem with what this tenant is proposing. It is simply providing you with greater security. You should make sure, however, that you and the tenant both understand (and perhaps put in writing) what this extra money is for and that there is no confusion as to what months the extra rent is covering and when the tenant will be required to start paying rent on a monthly basis.
