Legal Question in Personal Injury in Maryland

Hospital bill mailed to incorrect address

I was hospitalized in June and never received a bill for the amount not paid by Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Today I was called and harrassed by a collection agency because I never paid the bill. When I finally got a straight answer, it turns out that the hospital sent the bill to an address I lived at 8 years ago. I am concerned that my credit rating and my reputation may be damaged due to this major gaffe by the hospital. I am also concerned about possible identity theft/abuse as a result of this collection agency having my personal information. What legal recourse, if any, do I have?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Re: Hospital bill mailed to incorrect address

I suggest you inquire of the collection agency as to whether they've reported the debt to the credit bureau. You can also request a free credit report from each of the 3 credit reporting bureaus to see if it's been reported.

If it hasn't been reported and you've now paid the bill, you shouldn't have a problem. If it shows up, demand that the collection agency write a letter to the credit agencies explaining the situation and asking that your record be expunged. Unless this incident has an adverse effect on your credit rating, you haven't really suffered any damages.
