Legal Question in Personal Injury in Maryland

Can a lawyer charge me 33% on my medical bills that I had to take out a loan to

Can a Lawyer charge me 33.3% on medical bills that I have had to pay from a loan that I had to get to be opporated on? I was in a car accident that was not my fault and the PIP ran out. I had no health insurance so the doctors would not opperate unless I paid first.

I took out a loan on my house to pay for this upfront.

Now not only am I paying 7.5% on this loan but the lawyer wants 33.3% aswell. Please let me know if this is legal. Thank You

Re: Can a lawyer charge me 33% on my medical bills that I had to take out a loan

Depends on your contract with the lawyer. If the contract says lawyer gets 33%, operation costs $9,000.00, loan on house to pay for operation is $9,000.00, and your settlement with insurance company for the other party is $9,000.00, then lawyer gets $3,000.00. Percentage contracts with lawyers usually depend on the amount of settlement or judgement, and have nothing to do with the amount of your medical bills or amount of your loans to pay medical bills. If the settlement offer was too low relative to the amount of your bills, maybe you should not have accepted it.

Anyway, as I said, the answer to your question depends on your contract with the lawyer.
