Legal Question in Traffic Law in Maryland

Automobile accident

My son rear-ended a car and was given a citation by the state police. A local policeman who had traffic stopped for a funeral said he saw the accident and it wasn't my son's fault, the woman cut him off and then quickly put on her brakes and he was unable to stop. The state police officer said if my son came to court he would put in a good word with the judge but no guarantee the ticket would be dropped. Due to distance, loss of work, etc we plan on just paying the ticket.(we are ok with insurance and such) My question is if for some reason the other party sues, would paying the ticket affect the outcome of the suit or would the case be viewed on its own merit?
