Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Maryland

A jury awarded me $1.5 million in a lawsuit, but the verdict is under appeal. I think the appeal process will take a very long time. I am 83 years old, in very poor health, and I am sure I will die before I get any of the money. My Will leaves my estate to my 5 children. When any money is paid, perhaps a year or more after my death, will it go to my estate and be distributed according to my Will? Or, is my Will invalid since I died a long time before that? If my Will doesn't apply any more, then how is the money handled?

If the will is otherwise valid and you haven't gotten married since the will, the judgment will be divided in the accordance with the will. Therefore, the money will be considered residuary part of the estate. If your five children receive everything, they will receive the money.

However, if you are concened about your will, discuss it with the attorney who draft it. If you don't have an attorney, take it to a estate lawyer. If you don't already have one in mind, I am available to discuss the matter with you.
