are there any benefits to being elderly and not having to pay high credit card debt

Bankruptcy isn't just about eliminating debt, but rather is a means for someone who cannot repay their debt to get some relief from it. Whether the elderly person could file or not would depend upon their particular financial situation. If they can file, of course, the benefit is the same for everyone: Having less worry knowing that the debt situation is under control and that the creditors have stopped calling.
