Legal Question in Business Law in Massachusetts

Stolen Password?

I have reason to believe that a password was stolen to gain access to a VIP's computer in my company's corporate computer network. Upon stealing the password, the individual sent emails discussing trade secrets and confidental business information to our primary competitor, which resulted in a very serious situation with our competitor. What; if anything, do I have for options in this matter?

Re: Stolen Password?

If you are not the senior manager or Pres of the company, report the incident and your suspicions to him immediately.

The company should immediately file a police report and have the dectives investigate.

The company should immediately review computer security and password protections. You should also contact the recipient of the unauthorized transmission and demand the quarentine of the data/info sent and confirmation that they will not use the material. You should also contact your corporate counsel to assist you in protecting the information.

Re: Stolen Password?

File a police report and let the detectives follow the trail.

Meanwhile, your company should put the recipient of the information on notice that the information was wrongfully transmitted and should be quarantined and the data destroyed. If you do not elicit satisfactory assurances, you should engage counsel to resolve the matter, but give them a fair chance to do the right thing -- it often happens.

Best wishes,
